How-To Choose Fonts For Your Yard Sign

Although choosing a font for your yard signs seems like a simple task, it's one that you should not take lightly. Front choice affects the readability of your signs considerably, so if you choose a font that's hard-to-read, your sign won't be nearly as effective as it could be. At the same time, a simple, easy-to-read font can sometimes be boring and can limit your branding options. Before you ever play with a font, however, make sure you have your message fully-written, edited, and ready-to-go. Every word looks different in every font, so it's important to know what you're going to say so you can pick a font that highlights that message. Here's what you need to consider when picking lawn sign fonts.

Number of fonts-Using different fonts is a good way to make your sign look more custom and stylized. It also emphasizes each part of the message as the reader's eye is drawn to the different font choices. However, don't let your font usage get out of hand. You want to find the right balance so your fonts are distinct but there aren't so many on the sign that it looks cluttered and busy. It's generally best to use two fonts for a small yard sign (18"x24"). This gives you enough options to be creative, but not so much that your sign looks inconsistent.
Style of fonts-Another important factor to consider is your typeface, or font style. If you're creating a brand (or if you already have one), your fonts will be an important part of it, so choose carefully. Your fonts should look professional, interesting, and, above all, easy-to-read. Serif fonts have stylized tips and ends on the characters (called serifs) to look more interesting. They are often used in books. Sans-serif fonts are more plain and simple; they are generally used online. Debates range as to which one is more readable, but it's generally best to stay away from highly-stylized fonts, other than possibly to brand your business name. Funky, unique fonts are certainly interesting, but they can border on being unprofessional. Make sure your font choices are appropriate for your industry.
Treatment of fonts-Once you've picked your fonts, decide how you would like them to be treated. This means bold, italic, underline, shadowing, shaping, etc. Plain, straight lines on a yard sign are okay if your message is simple, but using treatment is a great way to emphasize important information and make your sign stand out. Not every word should have treatment, but your key information should be the focus of your sign.
Size of fonts-Your final decision is font size. The best rule for size is that for every 1" of text height you get up to 10' of easy readability. Thus, if your yard sign is going to be read from nearby (like one that is near your entrance), your font can be fairly small. If you're placing a sign out near your parking lot, however, that you want to be read from across the street, make your font at least, say 3" tall. The bigger the text, the less room you'll have for it on your sign, so take this into account when designing. Don't cram a bunch of text onto a sign-always edit to produce the best result.
