Easy Murder Mystery Game Prop and Decoration Ideas

I wrote a pirate mystery game for a women in the US recently, who did her backyard up as a giant pirate ship and hid treasure throughout the yard for the guests to find. Conversely, I spoke to a woman at a recent game I facilitated (The Pool Hall Pummeling) who said she had so much fun, as the last murder mystery game she attended all they did was sit around a table and read clues.

Play Pen Yard

Sure, both methods work, but really, which party would you rather attend? There's no need to go all out like the woman with the pirate mystery game (unless you want to, of course), however there is something to be said for adding in little extras to make your party special. Here are some ideas I like to include when I facilitate or host my own murder mystery game party.

Play Pen Yard

- Create pamphlets with the pictures of each suspect.
I love this idea because there is so much potential to stir up some fun. In a recent game I facilitated for a family member's 60th birthday party, I created pamphlets in Paint, including pictures of each of the suspects. Only, instead of including nice pictures of my family members, I sifted through years of photo albums and selected the most menacing pictures of each person I could find. I distributed the pamphlets as everyone arrived, and the room was instantly filled with laughter over the photos. Cries of "where did you get this picture?" were accompanied with shrieks of joy, and even those not playing a suspect had a good time making fun of everyone's most murderous looking profile pics.

- Set up a mock murder scene
When playing a murder mystery game, nothing matters more than having a good imagination. Help your guests along by setting up a mock crime scene. I wrote a custom mystery for a baby shower of over 50 guests in which the nanny was stabbed. The hostess set up her spare bedroom as a crime scene and, as everyone entered, they were showed through the crime scene. That detail was listed as her guest's favorite moment of the party! How does one do this? Well, first you need to read ahead a bit in your Game Kit (not too far or you'll spoil the mystery) until you find the crime scene description. For this reason, Shot In The Dark Mystery Games always feature the crime scene description within the first few pages, usually as a Chapter One introduction. Once you have the details, set up a corner of the room or a whole room as the murder scene. You can use a dummy for the body, or simply lay out a chalk outline. This gives your visitors a visual, and something to talk about as they mingle before the murder mystery game begins.

- Give your visitors notebooks
The cheapest and easiest way of doing this is to visit a dollar store. Dollar stores have lots of stationary in all sizes, and the small notebooks (3"x5" will do) are inexpensive. You could even go so far as to have the notebooks specially printed if you chose! The notebooks serve as a great way for suspects and extra guests to keep track of clues as the murder mystery game unfolds and is a great keepsake for after the party. Don't forget to provide pens!

- Put the murder weapon in a Ziploc "Evidence" bag
At The Pool Hall Pummeling event I recently facilitated, I went to a billiard supply store and asked them for a single cue ball. They were happy to oblige and gave me many used cue balls to choose from. I picked the oldest, most worn cue ball, and they became curious why I picked that one. I told them it was to be used as a murder weapon. Through strange looks, they told me just to take it, that I didn't have to pay for it. I went home, squirted some red paint on my Halloween pumpkin and pummeled away! It made a great prop for the party, and as the Detective read the opening clues, he passed around the "bloody" cue ball in a Ziploc bag for everyone to view part of the evidence.

- Print off "I Accuse" sheets
The end of your murder mystery game contains a section where everyone gets to accuse a suspect and explain why they think that person was the murderer. Printing of "I accuse" forms allows everyone to write down their vote (a la Survivor) and then, when it comes their turn to accuse, flip their sheet over and show everyone who they think is the killer.

- Encourage your guests to dress their character
Characters come with descriptions, and using that description it's not hard to imagine what each character might wear. For extra characters, they can follow the theme. For example, while playing Murder on the Mound, have the suspects dress their character. The extra guests can come dressed as ball players, or even fans sporting foam fingers!

- Create Nametags
It's a common school of thought these days that name tags at a party are a pretty lame idea (think Ross from Friends as he threw the party in his new apartment). The only time it IS acceptable to have nametags is when hosting a murder mystery game party. At first, while guests are getting to know the suspects, the nametags will come in handy. Of course, you are not labeling these nametags with their real names, but the names of the character they play. Nametags can be as simple as the sticky "Hello My Name Is" ones available in stationary stores the world over, or as complex as tags you have made yourself on your computer, to professionally made name tags.

- Create forensic props
This prop idea works especially well for the Death Scene Investigation games, where forensics are the main focus of the game. But forensic props can be added to any murder mystery game you choose. The best place to find forensic game props are, believe it or not, toy stores. Forensic Labs, Handwriting Analysis Kits and DNA Laboratories are common in toy stores or any store that has a game section. I recently picked up a Fingerprint Examination Kit, which came with evidence bags, an alternate light source, fingerprinting brush and dust, crime scene tape and more. Whenever I facilitate a game, everyone oohs and aahs over my evidence bags and ALS. I don't tell them where I got it, but I'll tell you if you promise to keep it between us.

If you have a clever idea you're adding to your own Shot In The Dark Mysteries Game, please share it with us! And don't forget to send us pictures of your event for our upcoming picture gallery!

Kids Storage Totes

Never Again Hear Your Kids Say During The Summer, "I'm Bored!"

Every parent (to include me) has heard their kids say - with the incredible freedom of summer all around - "I'm bored!" As a life and executive coach, I find that every summer I am asked by my clients who are parents to tell them what they should do to keep their kids active, engaged and not bored during the greatest three months of the year (for kids).

Play Pen Yard

You know how it works. Your children are excited about the upcoming summer as the school year comes to a close. Then, for the first week or so they are all fired up and balls of energy. Then, they run out of energy and things to do. And you hear, "I'm bored," and "What should I do?" Your summer has just turned ugly.

Play Pen Yard

First of all, let me say that it is easy for kids to get bored during the summer because they have so much freedom. But childhood freedom often becomes the strongest of all chains; a slave master who uses mind-numbing boredom as punishment. My belief and study has shown that kids do not need unfettered freedom. Kids need structure in order to grow and feel fulfilled.

Here's my simple 3-step process for eliminating your child's boredom during the summer months.

Step 1
You should sit down with your kids before the school-is-out-for-the-summer season hits and write a list of their GOALS for the summer. Setting goals is the most important step you can take to keep your child from getting bored during the summer. Ask your kid these questions (and have them write down the answers):
- What new sports do you want to learn?
- What new challenges do you want to tackle?
- What new books do you want to read?
- What new sights do you want to see?
- What new skills do you want to learn?
- What area(s) do you want to improve in?

Step 2
Next - using the goals as your guide, you and your kid(s) should write out a week-by-week schedule of summer activities for them. (I actually recommend you have the entire summer scheduled out day-by-day, but let me allow you to ease into this.)

Step 3
Then, follow the schedule.

My kids have not uttered the phrase, "I'm bored," since I began this approach to their summers. They are too busy, engaged and happy to be bored! And yours will be as well. And I know that your kids and mine will look back someday (as we parents do) and say how great this or that summer was because of what they did.

To help you get rolling, I am providing you (below) a list of 301 things that your kid can do during the summer. Many of these are low cost or no cost. This list makes sure that no kid need ever be bored.

The following list of 301 activities will help your kid, your family, and you take full advantage of the warm weather season and spark the creativity that makes summer the best time of the year! Your kid can look over the list and choose any activities they are interested in and get started. Some of my suggested activities require parental permission, but most are suitable for your kids to complete on their own.

Dog/Child Interaction: How to Develop a Safe Relationship

Dog-child interaction is the single most important issue to deal with if you have a child and a dog. Children love dogs but dogs don't always love children. When you bring home a new puppy, your child should be trained together with your dog. Dog owners need to remember that it takes two to tango. Children aren't often taught how to treat a new doggy which can make his life a living hell. This is not only torment for your dog but can be dangerous to your child. Never trust your child alone with ANY dog, regardless of how gentle that dog is known to be. A child tends to know just which buttons to press to turn the gentlest animal into a dangerous beast. Most dogs initially feel threatened by a child because they are at eye level, they have high-pitched voices and make vigorous movements. The dog senses that the child is somewhat unpredictable. Dog-child interaction should be monitored in order to make sure that child and your dog are getting along.

Play Pen Yard

What you should teach your child
Do not let your child hug the dog until the dog-child relationship has developed and they've become comfortable with each other. Children are accustomed to showing their affection with a hug, but some dogs will tolerate it while others will not. Never approach a strange dog without asking the owner if it is o.k. to do so. Allow the dog to sniff you before you try to pat him. Stay away from stray dogs. A stray dog may carry disease or try to attack. Never scream or run away from a dog. This will only start a chase. Never run towards a dog or around a dog. Never approach a dog face to face. This is threatening to them. Always approach a dog from the side. This will allow the dog-child relationship to develop. Never look a dog square in the eyes. Never tease or hit a dog whether he's loose, tied up, behind a fence or in a crate. Never play rough games with a dog, such as tug-of-war. This will encourage a dog to become aggressive. Never pat a dog on the head. Always approach him under the chin or on his back. Never bother a sleeping dog. Never bother the dog while he's eating or chewing his favorite bone. A dog is not a toy. Never yank on his ears or pull his tail. If a dog poses a threat, teach your child to stay perfectly still with arms at the side, avoid eye contact, don't scream. If there is no one around who can pull the dog away, have your child use a jacket, schoolbag, garbage can cover, or anything he can find as a shield while backing away from the dog slowly. If a dog has knocked your child to the ground, he should curl up into a ball with his hands behind his head to protect his face. Never give the dog table food. Always play with your dog under adult supervision. Always be kind to your dog. This will help develop a dog-child friendship. Always protect your dog from harm.
What you should know as a dog owner
Begin obedience training your dog as soon as possible. Don't wait til he gets older, it'll only get harder. Never leave your child alone with the dog. Never let your child walk the dog alone. Never tie up your dog. Provide your dog with a fenced-in space instead. Socialize your dog. Get him acquainted with other dogs as early as possible. You should also get him familiar with everything in his environment, both indoors and outdoors. This is key in attempting to establish a great dog-child relationship. Reward your dog for good behavior with praise and a treat. If you leave your dog in the yard, make sure your fence does not have spaces large enough for a child to stick their hands through. Never allow your child to abuse the dog in any way. This will never enable a dog-child relationship to flourish. Give your dog a space to call his own to which he can retreat to if he is feeling bothered (such as a crate). Do not allow your child to invade your dog's space especially while your dog is eating. Get your dog used to being touched on all body parts. This will make him more comfortable around children. Teach your dog to maintain a good temperment in the case of having his food bowl taken away while he's eating or removing a chew toy from his mouth. This will allow your dog to be more comfortable having a child around when he's eating or chewing on his favorite toy. Teach your child how to properly handle the dog/puppy. Walk your dog on a leash. Do not allow him to roam free. Keep in mind that just because your dog is wonderful around your own children doesn't mean he will tolerate other children the same way. Spay/neuter your dog.
If you have a dog and are expecting a baby

Play Pen Yard

First off, if you haven't read the information above this subhead, go up and do so now. The above information will provide you with all the do's and dont's in preparing your dog for an addition to the family. If your dog has never been around a child for a long period of time, you will have the next nine months to get him used to it. Dog-child interaction is crucial at this stage.

Invite a niece, nephew, cousin, neighbor, etc. over for a few hours a week (Preferably a child who still wears a diaper. This will get the dog used to baby smell as well).

This idea satisfies two objectives: it will get your dog used to having a child around; and will develop your dog's behavior in such a way which allows him to have a dog-child relationship with almost any child. Teach your dog how to behave around a child using much of the information discussed above.

Do not wait until the baby is born in order to make adjustments. Try to make as many adjustments as you can before the baby arrives, this way he won't be hit with all these changes at once. For instance, if you will have to move furniture around to accommodate a high chair or a playpen, this may affect the placement of your dog's bed and bowl. If so, make this move before the baby arrives. This will lessen the impact it will have on your dog and is less likely to affect the dog-child relationship.

Once you have the nursery set up for the baby, teach your dog that he will not be allowed in the room, at all. If he learns this before the baby comes, it will lessen the dog's resentment towards the baby.

Get your dog used to the sounds a baby makes by playing a recording of a baby cooing and crying. Play this recording in the nursery in order to indicate to your dog where exactly he can expect these sounds to be coming from.

Make accommodations for your dog for the day you go into labor. He may have to spend hours alone before daddy's comes home from the hospital.

When it's time to bring the baby home, have someone go into another room with the dog while you put the baby down and get settled. Then bring the baby out and introduce the dog to the baby. The dog will probably give the baby a sniff or two and seek your attention. After all, he hasn't seen you in days. At this point, it would be a good idea to put the baby down and spend some time playing with the dog. Show him he's still loved. This will aid in the development of the dog-child relationship.

Your dog may require some extra attention in the first days of welcoming the baby. This will keep him from resenting the baby for stealing all the attention. Give him your undivided attention.

Allow your dog to be present when changing or feeding the baby.

Never yell at your dog for getting too close to the baby. Allow him to sniff the baby in order to get used to his scent. Make sure this is done under strict supervision. This will help nourish the dog-child relationship.

As the baby gets older, you will teach him to respect the dog and be gentle towards him.

Get your child to help you with dog chores, such as feeding and walking the dog.

Before your know it, a natural dog-child bond will form which will give them a long-lasting friendship for years to come.

Help your child and your dog live in perfect harmony by adhering to these simple rules. Once a good dog-child relationship has been established, this bond will last a lifetime.

If you have trouble controlling your dog, you should bring your dog (and your child) to an obedience class to help you get started.

To Picket Fences

Of the 359 homeowners in my area, 112 are running afoul of the law in a deviously blatant way by committing the heinous "fence offence;" in other words, breaching Los Angeles municipal code sections 12.21 and 12.22 which limit front yard fence and hedge height to a maximum 3 ½ feet above grade. Now that's a lot of criminal activity for one neighborhood.

Play Pen Yard

With their pens and pads, my investigative team--three 17-year-old, out-of-work babysitters--scoured my neighborhood in search of scoundrels and found one very troublesome woman. This 74 year old widow named Barbara gave them a suspicious story about how her "charming wooden slats" were installed unknowingly by her otherwise law-abiding husband in 1987. My detectives measured the "offensive picket" at a full four feet --rather than the legal 3 ½ -- above grade.

Play Pen Yard

When pressed, Barbara confessed that she had just received a letter from the L.A. City Attorney Rocky Delgadillo asking her to "appear for a City Attorney hearing to determine if a criminal complaint should be issued against (her)... for an alleged (fence) violation."

"It's a stressful situation," Barbara says. "It makes me feel like a felon. Shouldn't there be a statute of limitations on fences that have been in place for so long?"

Fence snitches are on the rise, according to some local representatives. Meddlesome neighbors or quality of life protectors, depending upon ones perspective, protest fences by calling the city's toll free number anonymously to tattle on their neighbors for wrought-iron, chain link and hedge indiscretions. Barbara's picket caught the attention of authorities when complainants tipped off the Department of Building and Safety to another neighbor's fence. A dozen families on the street received the ominous code violation letter.

My investigative crew told me to grab my polygraph and interrogation spotlight, and scurry to Barbara's home for a "Guantanamo Bay style" probe. But when I arrived, I took pity on the wide-eyed senior, hinting "Have you ever seen Leonardo DiCaprio's movie, "Catch Me If You Can?"

Of course, I would never advise Barbara to creep further into the recesses of crime by snubbing Mr. Delgadillo and tossing the violation notice in the trash. And I would hate for the fence fiasco to culminate in a showdown at a dusty printing warehouse in France, all on the taxpayers' dime.

But I wondered-- merely as a philosophical exercise--what would the city do if she were a "no show" at the hearing? How would the city react if Barbara faxed them a list of the other 111 high fences in our neighborhood, or better yet, the tens of thousands in L.A,?

Two things are certain: it would take a lot of out-of-work babysitters to compile the list, and it would start a revolution. Homeowners would not be willing to dismantle fences that cost them thousands of dollars to construct.

Whistle-blowing Barbara could then create a directory of every property with any sort of code violation. In fact, we have one now: it's called the phone book.

As a Realtor for the past 17 years, I have never sold a home that complies with every Building and Safety rule. There are enclosed patios and guest houses that are not "built to code;" there are water heaters, roofs and air conditioners that have been installed without permits. It can be illegal to park too many vehicles in the driveway or store too many items in the garage.

Due to a number of break-ins in the area, Barbara wants to retain her picket for security. Fence proponents tout other benefits, such as increased privacy and the flexibility to transform front yards into grassy play areas for kids and pets, especially when pools swallow up the rear of a lot. Hill-adjacent properties as well as those that have succumbed to expansion or mansionization may not have room for a yard without enclosing the front.

Too many years have passed and too many fences have been built for Los Angeles to attempt a perilous, impractical and costly u-turn back to the "Leave it to Beaver" days when neighborhoods had unobstructed front lawns. One third of all home-owning Angelenos cannot and should not be inputted into a "fence offender database."

The Barbaras of this city should not be frightened by official notices, turned into scofflaws and labeled "casualties of the process," as one fence snitch calls her.

The city could encourage residents to drape existing fences with greenery to capture the pastoral quality of the yesteryear or require them to contribute 0 annually to a neighborhood beautification fund in return for the right to ignore the law.

The city could even change the law to accommodate higher fences and mature hedges; after all, an owner has paid for her front yard, so she should, within reason, be able to use it as she pleases.

The "fence" controversy has traveled beyond Los Angeles to the California communities of Burbank, Santa Monica, Richmond, and Glendale where angry homeowners have flocked to city council meetings--often breaking attendance records--to voice their dissatisfaction with what they perceive to be arcane and restrictive rules. The issue is likely to continue weaving its way across America since most communities limit front-yard fence heights to three to four feet while property owners routinely disregard the laws.

As I said good-bye to infamous L.A. picket, Barbara whispered in my ear.

"Don't tell Mr. Delgadillo, but I wish my fence were higher. Then I could take out my trash in my nightie."

I nodded, "Why should a person have to get dressed just to walk out her own front door?"

It's A Squirrel, A Butterfly, No A Papillion!

No one who comes face to face with the breed of dog known as the Papillion can ever mistake it. This small, friendly, happy go lucky dog looks as though he is wearing a feathery butterfly mask. In fact, Papillion is French for butterfly and this dog is so named because of his trademark ears and their feathering does indeed look like butterfly wings. However, when viewed from the backside this dogs thick log tail that curls high over the backside has also earned it the nickname of the squirrel dog. No matter what he looks like you can bet that this little dog is all dog with a personality much larger than its actual size.

Play Pen Yard

What does a Papillion Look Like?

Play Pen Yard

Papillions are indeed little dogs standing on average between 8 and 11 inches tall and weighing a mere 7 to ten pounds. They are considered companion dogs and it is believed that at least forerunners of the Papillion were pets of kings and queens.

This is a parti-colored breed meaning that they are white mixed with another color and sometimes accented in a third color. They come in every dog color combination except ones such as black, sable, red, lemon and fawn. They have a small head that is rounded at the top and marked by their trademark large ears. Their coat is long and silky and although it should be brushed daily it doesn't tend to mat or tangle. They do tend to be average shedders however.

Personality

This little dog has a giant personality, is fun loving and playful, becoming very attached to their owners wanting to spend all their time with them. This makes them a perfect pet. However, despite the fact that this dog is tiny and delicate looking he is not the type of dog to want to sit on your lap all day content to be petted and stroked; quite the opposite in fact. This dog is highly intelligent and energetic and needs to be with people who can provide him plenty of mental and physical exercise.

Due to his eagerness and desire to please this dog is easy to train and in fact this breed does well in dog shows, dog rings and obedience trials. He is a quick learner and in fact, thrives on learning new things so he is an easy dog to teach all kinds of tricks to as well as obedience commands.

He also loves to run and play and can get much of his exercise through fetch games and other such activities, but he also needs to go on a walk with his owner to be completely happy. While the Papillion can adjust to apartment living if walked regularly and often he does best with families that have at least a small yard where he can run and play several times a day. He loves traveling with his people and if well socialized can go almost anywhere with you.

However, it is wise when adopting a Papillion to choose the breeder carefully as these dogs need to begin their socialization before they even open their eyes after birth. They tend to be fear biters if not socialized early and need to be handled gently and often as soon after birth as possible. This handling needs to continue through their early development so that they will not be afraid of people when they are weaned and ready to go to new homes.
