Top 10 Flea Control Treatments and Methods

When you see your dog or cat chewing, and or, scratching excessively, it's usually a strong sign that a flea control war plan needs to be implemented. A flea bite causes an allergic reaction that result in itching. Unfortunately, a lot people will let their dogs and cats suffer until they are bitten, before deciding to an implement a flea control program.

Play Pen Yard

Fleas can make your dog or cat's life miserable, and yours too. Let's just say it: fleas are cat's and dog's number one enemy. Just one female flea can produce up to 200 eggs per day, and eggs may lay dormant for up to one year. Meaning, if you don't treat the core problem, and just your pet, the chances are that any flea control treatments you apply to your pet will delay the inevitable: an ongoing flea infestation in and outside of your home.

Play Pen Yard

There are even many methods that don't require flea control products to get rid of fleas. Below is a list of the top 10 flea control methods and treatments that will help you to get rid of that annoying flea infestation.

1. Flea Treatment - Giving your dog or cat immediate relief is a must. There are many flea control treatments on the market. Hands down, the best is Advantage Flea and Frontline Flea treatments for dogs and cats. So if you're going to buy such a treatment, spend the few extra dollars to get the best. Eggs can lay dormant up to a year, so one treatment will not do. Just like any treatment, Frontline and Advantage flea treatments are not as effective if only applied once. Ongoing applications will be needed to kill additional fleas that might be brought back in.

2. Flea Spray Indoors - Spraying inside is a key component for your flea control program. Flea sprays like flea bombs and aerosols are the best. For best results choose a flea spray that has an IGR (insect growth regulator). IGR disrupts a baby flea's life cycle preventing it from growing up to the biting adult flea we all know and love.

3. Pet Bedding - If your pet sleeps outside, then using Cedar chips for their bedding works great. Cedar is a natural flea repellent. There's no point for long term flea control if you don't address where your pet sleeps. Many stores also sell Cedar dust, but unless you want your dog to drag Cedar dust throughout the yard and house, stick with the chips.

4. Vacuuming - This is the most important step that you need to take to get rid of fleas in your home after treatment. Most the time just the vibration of the vacuum when getting sucked up will kill them. Be sure to get rid of or empty the bag when finished and it throw away. Vacuum carpets, couches, and chairs with cushions thoroughly. It's just not the adults you want gone, it's the eggs too.

5. Flea Spray Outdoors - If your dog has fleas, and spends a lot of time outside, then chances are you need to treat outdoors as well. There are numerous flea sprays on the market, so READ THE LABEL for proper application rates. Remember to see if the label says it contains an IGR.

6. Flea Trap / Monitor - Homemade flea traps, like a bowl of soapy water with a light over it, are very common and are a great way to kill, and to see if you still have flea activity. Laying a piece of white paper on the ground and moving it a little bit will also attract fleas if they are still present.

7. Infested Dogs and Cats - Having other people bring their infested dog or cat to your home is another way to have flea problems again. Were not saying that your parent's dog can't come over and play with Fluffy, but it doesn't hurt to check.

8. Fleas Natural - Brewer's yeast pills are an example of natural flea control. Most health food stores will carry them. Remember that this is not a cure all, but another tool in a flea control program.

9. Flea Shampoo - Flea shampoo is just a temporary solution to a bigger problem. Like treatments, shampoos will kill the adult fleas only. When the fleas lay eggs, they drop to the floor or ground, which is where they hatch. So shampoo does nothing to kill flea eggs.

10. Flea Collars - Flea collars are not as effective as flea treatments such as Frontline and Advantage. If you work on a tight budget, then a flea collar is better than nothing.

Throwing a Shipwrecked Island Party Makes The Most of Summer's End

Rather than being sad when the end of summer rolls around, I say, it's party time! Instead of feeling like your boat has run aground by the end of summer, why not throw a summer's end soirée that's fun for the whole family...maybe even the whole neighborhood!

Play Pen Yard

If the thought of throwing a party is akin to walking the plank and jumping into the dark abyss, then think of me as your life preserver! I'll take you through the process of putting a party together using my simple formula for creating memorable events. When we're done organizing the details of your summer party into six easy-to-remember elements, you'll be sailing smoothly into an experience that your guests will treasure for many summers to come. Ahoy matey!

Play Pen Yard

Element #1 - Theme, Mood, & Color: Carry Out Your Theme in Everything You Do

Every great party starts with a great theme! For your summer's end soirée throw a Shipwrecked Island Party! What is s a shipwrecked island party? Well, it's a not an island luau, although a luau-style feast could certainly be a part of the festivities. It's not a pirate party, although a few pirates in attendance might add a bit of fun, and it's not a beachcomber party, although you'll want plenty of sand and seashells in your décor. Think of a deserted island inhabited by a group of tattered castaways hoping for rescue and you'll get the picture.

When creating the theme for this party, I found it helpful to use my "imagination board" to perform a "brainstorming" exercise. An imagination board is a large dry erase board that affords you plenty of room to write and allows a free flow of ideas. To begin with, I wrote my theme name, "Shipwrecked Island," in the center of the board and then around it wrote down everything that came to mind such as boat, sails, treasure, stranded, beach, shells, trunks, chests, mosquito nets, fishing nets, palm trees, flowers, coconuts, fish, and crabs. Then, to help get my creative juices flowing, I thought about all the great movies, TV shows, and music that had to do with shipwrecks, islands and castaways, like "Titanic," "Lost," "Swiss Family Robinson," "Castaway," "Survivor," the "Gilligan's Island" theme song, and tunes by Jimmy Buffet and Bob Marley. I used these ideas as inspiration for my invitations, decorations, menu and signature drink, activities, and special touches.

Element #2 - Invitations: Make Them Inviting

If you were on a deserted island somewhere and needed help, something you might do is write a message in a bottle and cast it out to sea in hope that someone would get your SOS. This is both a fun and easy idea because there are many places you can find message-in-a-bottle type invitation kits both online and in brick and mortar craft stores, or you can make your own using real glass bottles.

Most craft kits include paper, but if you don't like the paper choice, you can opt for your own. Start your invitations with a great opening line that ties into your theme. Something like: "Come Get Stranded for a While" (taken from my brainstorming exercise). This opening line sets the tone for the party and let's people know they're in for some fun. Be sure to include the who, what, where, when, and why details. Encourage guests to wear tattered clothes, their castaway best, to add a fun and casual feeling to the party and another layer of authenticity. Add interest to the inside of the bottle by including some sand and a few tiny seashells. Finish the invitation off with a twine embellishment simply wrapped around the neck of the bottle, adhere your mailing label over the ends of the twine and your done! You've created a fun invitation that will make people want to come and get lost for a while!

Element #3 - Decor & Ambiance: Set and Setting Are Everything

The trick to decorating for my summer's end Shipwrecked Island Party was keeping in mind that it was all about creating illusion. My house was the ship and the yard the island. To board the ship, guests had to walk the plank which was surrounded by an interesting display of washed up treasures including a small antique chair, some sand to give the illusion of the shore, an old hand mirror, jewelry, tarnished pewter candleholders, and other items that looked water damaged and time worn.

To enhance the island feel, around the perimeter of the outdoor party space I placed a vinyl "Scene Setter" of the sun setting brilliantly over the ocean titled "Sunset Beach" (available online from Party City). A few potted palm trees, dried palm fronds, and lush bouquets of tropical flowers completed the look I was after.

However you go about creating your summer's end theme, there are two things to keep in mind to maintain the authenticity of your party: (1) Remember if you were on a deserted island, you would be surrounded by water; and (2) When selecting decorations, choose items that are found in nature, things you might actually find on a deserted island, like palm fronds, shells, leafs, driftwood, and tropical flowers, and use natural colors and fibers such as brown raffia, twine, and brown rope.

Element #4 - Food & Beverage: Never Stress About Food and Drinks

The menu for my summer's end Shipwrecked Island Party included a signature cocktail I created called "Blue Lagoon." Made with blue Curacao, a liqueur flavored with the dried peel of the laraha citrus fruit grown on the island of Curacao, this delicious drink, with its lovely deep blue color and served in a large clam shell punch bowl, is reminiscent of a tropical lagoon. If you've taken the time to prepare a great cocktail, the best way to do it justice is to serve it in an appropriate glass. Using the right glass for the right drink can accentuate the smell, texture, and flavor of the beverage. So for my signature Blue Lagoon cocktail, I chose coconut cups, although another fun idea would be to use mixed-matched glasses, mugs, and cups that have seemingly washed ashore after a shipwreck. Both are reusable, environmentally friendly options over plastic or paper cups.

Which brings me to serving pieces -- to create a clever and unique buffet table for this shipwreck party, use mix-matched serving pieces that again, have seemingly washed ashore or that you would find in nature, such as palm fronds, tropical leaves, bamboo mats, driftwood, and shells. Luau fringed place mats are fun, as are beachcomber hats, which also make great serving bowls when turned upside down. Additional table décor might include an eclectic mix of clear-glass bottles wrapped with twine and filled with seashells and flowers.

Element #5 - Activities: Engage Your Guests in An Activity

"Ahoy Matey! This is the spirit of Captain Blue Beard of the once dreaded pirate ship the Marine Pearl. If you are reading this [ARGH] it means you've found me treasure maps! So, make two teams and give a map to each. If you wants to find me gold, you gotta first find me clues. The maps will show you the way. When all the clues are found, join teams to unscramble the words. This shall point the way to me treasure chest and your reward!"

A treasure hunt can be great fun at a party yet challenging to pull off. I'll break it down, however, into seven easy peezy steps using the treasure hunt created specifically for this Shipwrecked Island Party Plan.

For this activity, you'll need: - 2 blank treasure maps - A Sharpie pen - Gold coins - A treasure chest with booty or treasure - 2 pieces of note paper - Twine to tie up the scrolled maps.

Step 1 - The maps. Start with a blank map (which can be bought online). Customize it to reflect the key areas of your party space where the treasure hunt will take place. Make a copy so that you have two identical maps, one for each team.

Step 2 - Decide where to hide the treasure chest and make up a clue that describes the location. I hid my treasure chest in a back corner of my yard so my clue read: "Between two gates on the Southwest shore."

Step 3 - Using a Sharpie pen, write your clue using letters, combinations of letters, and words on 16 gold coins, so that there are 8 clues/coins per team.

Step 4 - Separate the coins into two piles. While hiding one set of coins, mark one of the maps with each location of the hidden clues. Repeat the process with the other map and set of coins using another part of the party area.

Step 5 - Roll up the maps and tie them with twine.

Step 6 - Type the above note from Captain Blue Beard and attach it to the maps so that everyone knows the rules of the game. If you're working with small children, it's a good idea to have at least one older child on each team who can read and help the others understand.

Step 7 - Hide the booty-filled treasure chest.

For a variation, put a lock on the treasure chest and ask your guests to do something fun or silly to win the key to open it. Done right, this treasure hunt can be fun for adults too. Think of all the creative things you could put inside the chest. I'll leave that to your imagination.

Element #6 - Special Touches: Set Your Party Apart, Give Them Something From the Heart

Get your guests in the mood for your summer's end Shipwrecked Island Party with a favor to enhance their experience during the party itself. Upon arrival, give each of the adult men a lei made of tropical fern leaves, orchids, or seashells; the women, flower hair clips. Give the children something extra special. Fill goody bags with a pirate hat, an eye patch, a hoop earring, a telescope, chocolate gold coins, and a few other fun costume pieces that will transform them into pirates. Outfitting the kids as pirates ties in beautifully with the treasure hunt they'll be doing later as an activity. To enhance their pirate experience, create a Pirate's Cove or a place where they can congregate and play during the party.

A clever and simple way to tie in a birthday element is to have your young buccaneers sing Happy Birthday to the birthday guest of honor in exchange for the key to the treasure chest at the end of the Treasure Hunt.

Common New Born Puppy Health Problems and Diseases

Most newborn puppies are very weak and are vulnerable to health problems. Prevention is always better than cure as recommended; to prevent the opportunity of infections or other health problems, basic to intermediate knowledge about caring for your new born puppy is very important.

Play Pen Yard

Here are some of the few common puppy health problems and diseases that a weak puppy might be susceptible to.

Play Pen Yard

Hypothermia:

Hypothermia is one of the major problems. A tiny new born puppy has difficulty regulating it's body temperature as it's thermoregulatory system may not be fully developed yet. One common solution is to keep a new born puppy in a moderate heated environment of 85-90F degrees for the first two to three weeks.

How can you do that? Simple, use a heated dog lamp or warming lamp. Also, it is a good practice to use warm bottles (not hot as they might be dangerous) and a puppy warming blanket. Use hypoallergenic cotton blankets as an alternative because they retain some body heat.

Parvovirus:

This is a common diseases for a young puppy and a dog. As a dog owner, ensure that your puppy is adequately protected against the deadly Parvovirus disease. Parvovirus is a contagious disease that attacks the lining of the dog or puppy's digestive system. It is usually spread through feces of another infected dog. Parvo can also be carried on kennels, crates and accessories of another dog.

Symptoms include lack of appetite, vomiting, diarrhea, weariness and putrid smelling dog stool. These symptoms have also been linked to high fever which could lead to congestive heart failure.

Make sure that your puppies are vaccinated under a proper program and a health time table. Veterinarians recommend that infected puppies should not be taken to the dog park or even the yard where they can interact with other dogs, until the proper vaccination and injections are administered.

Colostrum:

This is an anti-body that can be given to your new born puppy at approximately 24 hours after birth.

How? Simple, by feeding your puppy the full-bodied first milk of it's mother. This step if available, is critical to your puppy's health and health problems prevention.

If you are concerned about your new born puppy' slower absorption rate; it is quite common, visit your local vet for a consultation about their Colustum's absorption rate. Your vet will usually do a blood test to check your puppy's anti-body absorption rate and if needed, your vet will then proceed to inject some serum from it's mother to speed up the process.

Put Together Your Own Animals

Since you were a kid, you have been asking your parents to get you some animals. You did not care just what kind of animal just as long as you can have one for a pet. You have dreamed of having some fish in an aquarium which you can feed when you get home. The thing is, you have dreamed of having a pet at the very least but your parents just would not allow you to because it is a big responsibility to take care of another living being.

Play Pen Yard

At present, you live in your own home and you do not have to deal with housemates or siblings or your parents who will tell you that you cannot have your own pet. But now that you can do whatever you would like to do, your career comes in and your job actually requires you to go to various places. And by that, it means that you are not home for days or even weeks and leaving your pets is not a good idea.

Play Pen Yard

Now, you still have the option to actually take care of animals and take care of them even if you do not have enough time to actually be there for them. Your parents were right. Having pets and animals around is a big responsibility and that is why with the 4D animal puzzles, you surely have realized that. It is your responsibility that you do follow the instructions in the kit that comes with it.

These will allow you to actually see the animals just as they really are.

These animals are the newest type of puzzles which are known as 4D puzzles. They will only allow you to have the chance to own animals and pets but they will also make you think and give you the responsibility of putting them together. That surely means hours of fun on your end.

Tips to Housebreak Your Puppy

Housebreaking can be one of the most frustrating parts of having a new puppy. Here are some tips to help you.

Play Pen Yard

Routine
Puppies are easily confused. You must provide a consistent routine. Take him out the same door every time he has to "go". Walk him to the same area. Use one word to tell him it's time to "go". He'll soon begin to connect the word with the action.

Play Pen Yard

Learn when your puppy will most likely need to "go".

-First thing in the morning
-After a nap
-Right after eating or drinking
-During or after play times
-After being confined
-Right before going to bed

Your weekend and weekday routines should be the same. Keep a "housebreaking journal" so that you can get an overall picture of your puppies bathroom schedule. Everyone in your household needs to follow same the routine. If one person says "out" when it's time to go outside, and someone else says "go potty", your puppy will get confused.

This probably won't destroy your housebreaking attempts. However, it will take longer to housebreak your puppy. Do the same thing at the same time everyday, and he'll quickly learn what is expected of him.

Time To "Go"
Your puppy will do certain things when he needs to "go". Here's what to watch for:

-Sniffing and circling
-Stops playing or wanders off.
-Whining and wiggling when you're holding him
-Standing at the door

If you see your puppy doing any of these things, take him outside right away.

Traditional Housebreaking
With traditional housebreaking, your puppy learns to "go" outside. Let your puppy sleep in a crate or kennel. It feels secure, like a "den". Puppies have small bladders. So you'll have to get up early in the morning to take him outside if you choose this method.

You can't and shouldn't leave your puppy in his kennel all day. For daytime, you'll need to buy a play pen, like the ones made by Pet Gear or Jeep. Or you could use a pet gate to confine your puppy in one room when you can't watch him.

Take your puppy out on a leash to his potty spot. Give your cue ("Go potty!") and wait for him to do something. Praise him, reward him, and wait for him to "go" again. Puppies don't usually empty themselves right away. If you take him inside now, he'll have an accident in the house. When he "goes" again, praise him, reward him, and let him off leash to play. If you're taking a walk, wait until he finishes before you continue your walk.

Be generous with your rewards in the beginning. Offer verbal praise, petting, treats and play time whenever your puppy eliminates in the right place. Don't punish him for accidents. If he "goes" in the house, clean it up with something containing an odor enzyme remover, such as "Nature's Miracle". Don't use bleach or harsh chemicals. These can make your puppy very sick.

Other Options
What if you live in an apartment or have no yard? Consider paper training. Follow the same housebreaking routine. But train your puppy to "go" on a paper instead of outside on the grass. Nature's Miracle makes grass scented puppy pads to help with this type of training.

You can also train your puppy to use a litter box. Check out the Pet Patio Potty by Doggy Solutions or go to your local pet store for ideas.

Training your puppy to go on paper or in a litter box doesn't mean that he'll never learn to "go" outside. It simply offers you and your puppy another option when traditional housebreaking isn't possible.

Have patience. Be consistent with your training and routine, and your puppy will soon learn where to "go".

Easy Murder Mystery Game Prop and Decoration Ideas

I wrote a pirate mystery game for a women in the US recently, who did her backyard up as a giant pirate ship and hid treasure throughout the yard for the guests to find. Conversely, I spoke to a woman at a recent game I facilitated (The Pool Hall Pummeling) who said she had so much fun, as the last murder mystery game she attended all they did was sit around a table and read clues.

Play Pen Yard

Sure, both methods work, but really, which party would you rather attend? There's no need to go all out like the woman with the pirate mystery game (unless you want to, of course), however there is something to be said for adding in little extras to make your party special. Here are some ideas I like to include when I facilitate or host my own murder mystery game party.

Play Pen Yard

- Create pamphlets with the pictures of each suspect.
I love this idea because there is so much potential to stir up some fun. In a recent game I facilitated for a family member's 60th birthday party, I created pamphlets in Paint, including pictures of each of the suspects. Only, instead of including nice pictures of my family members, I sifted through years of photo albums and selected the most menacing pictures of each person I could find. I distributed the pamphlets as everyone arrived, and the room was instantly filled with laughter over the photos. Cries of "where did you get this picture?" were accompanied with shrieks of joy, and even those not playing a suspect had a good time making fun of everyone's most murderous looking profile pics.

- Set up a mock murder scene
When playing a murder mystery game, nothing matters more than having a good imagination. Help your guests along by setting up a mock crime scene. I wrote a custom mystery for a baby shower of over 50 guests in which the nanny was stabbed. The hostess set up her spare bedroom as a crime scene and, as everyone entered, they were showed through the crime scene. That detail was listed as her guest's favorite moment of the party! How does one do this? Well, first you need to read ahead a bit in your Game Kit (not too far or you'll spoil the mystery) until you find the crime scene description. For this reason, Shot In The Dark Mystery Games always feature the crime scene description within the first few pages, usually as a Chapter One introduction. Once you have the details, set up a corner of the room or a whole room as the murder scene. You can use a dummy for the body, or simply lay out a chalk outline. This gives your visitors a visual, and something to talk about as they mingle before the murder mystery game begins.

- Give your visitors notebooks
The cheapest and easiest way of doing this is to visit a dollar store. Dollar stores have lots of stationary in all sizes, and the small notebooks (3"x5" will do) are inexpensive. You could even go so far as to have the notebooks specially printed if you chose! The notebooks serve as a great way for suspects and extra guests to keep track of clues as the murder mystery game unfolds and is a great keepsake for after the party. Don't forget to provide pens!

- Put the murder weapon in a Ziploc "Evidence" bag
At The Pool Hall Pummeling event I recently facilitated, I went to a billiard supply store and asked them for a single cue ball. They were happy to oblige and gave me many used cue balls to choose from. I picked the oldest, most worn cue ball, and they became curious why I picked that one. I told them it was to be used as a murder weapon. Through strange looks, they told me just to take it, that I didn't have to pay for it. I went home, squirted some red paint on my Halloween pumpkin and pummeled away! It made a great prop for the party, and as the Detective read the opening clues, he passed around the "bloody" cue ball in a Ziploc bag for everyone to view part of the evidence.

- Print off "I Accuse" sheets
The end of your murder mystery game contains a section where everyone gets to accuse a suspect and explain why they think that person was the murderer. Printing of "I accuse" forms allows everyone to write down their vote (a la Survivor) and then, when it comes their turn to accuse, flip their sheet over and show everyone who they think is the killer.

- Encourage your guests to dress their character
Characters come with descriptions, and using that description it's not hard to imagine what each character might wear. For extra characters, they can follow the theme. For example, while playing Murder on the Mound, have the suspects dress their character. The extra guests can come dressed as ball players, or even fans sporting foam fingers!

- Create Nametags
It's a common school of thought these days that name tags at a party are a pretty lame idea (think Ross from Friends as he threw the party in his new apartment). The only time it IS acceptable to have nametags is when hosting a murder mystery game party. At first, while guests are getting to know the suspects, the nametags will come in handy. Of course, you are not labeling these nametags with their real names, but the names of the character they play. Nametags can be as simple as the sticky "Hello My Name Is" ones available in stationary stores the world over, or as complex as tags you have made yourself on your computer, to professionally made name tags.

- Create forensic props
This prop idea works especially well for the Death Scene Investigation games, where forensics are the main focus of the game. But forensic props can be added to any murder mystery game you choose. The best place to find forensic game props are, believe it or not, toy stores. Forensic Labs, Handwriting Analysis Kits and DNA Laboratories are common in toy stores or any store that has a game section. I recently picked up a Fingerprint Examination Kit, which came with evidence bags, an alternate light source, fingerprinting brush and dust, crime scene tape and more. Whenever I facilitate a game, everyone oohs and aahs over my evidence bags and ALS. I don't tell them where I got it, but I'll tell you if you promise to keep it between us.

If you have a clever idea you're adding to your own Shot In The Dark Mysteries Game, please share it with us! And don't forget to send us pictures of your event for our upcoming picture gallery!

Kids Storage Totes

Never Again Hear Your Kids Say During The Summer, "I'm Bored!"

Every parent (to include me) has heard their kids say - with the incredible freedom of summer all around - "I'm bored!" As a life and executive coach, I find that every summer I am asked by my clients who are parents to tell them what they should do to keep their kids active, engaged and not bored during the greatest three months of the year (for kids).

Play Pen Yard

You know how it works. Your children are excited about the upcoming summer as the school year comes to a close. Then, for the first week or so they are all fired up and balls of energy. Then, they run out of energy and things to do. And you hear, "I'm bored," and "What should I do?" Your summer has just turned ugly.

Play Pen Yard

First of all, let me say that it is easy for kids to get bored during the summer because they have so much freedom. But childhood freedom often becomes the strongest of all chains; a slave master who uses mind-numbing boredom as punishment. My belief and study has shown that kids do not need unfettered freedom. Kids need structure in order to grow and feel fulfilled.

Here's my simple 3-step process for eliminating your child's boredom during the summer months.

Step 1
You should sit down with your kids before the school-is-out-for-the-summer season hits and write a list of their GOALS for the summer. Setting goals is the most important step you can take to keep your child from getting bored during the summer. Ask your kid these questions (and have them write down the answers):
- What new sports do you want to learn?
- What new challenges do you want to tackle?
- What new books do you want to read?
- What new sights do you want to see?
- What new skills do you want to learn?
- What area(s) do you want to improve in?

Step 2
Next - using the goals as your guide, you and your kid(s) should write out a week-by-week schedule of summer activities for them. (I actually recommend you have the entire summer scheduled out day-by-day, but let me allow you to ease into this.)

Step 3
Then, follow the schedule.

My kids have not uttered the phrase, "I'm bored," since I began this approach to their summers. They are too busy, engaged and happy to be bored! And yours will be as well. And I know that your kids and mine will look back someday (as we parents do) and say how great this or that summer was because of what they did.

To help you get rolling, I am providing you (below) a list of 301 things that your kid can do during the summer. Many of these are low cost or no cost. This list makes sure that no kid need ever be bored.

The following list of 301 activities will help your kid, your family, and you take full advantage of the warm weather season and spark the creativity that makes summer the best time of the year! Your kid can look over the list and choose any activities they are interested in and get started. Some of my suggested activities require parental permission, but most are suitable for your kids to complete on their own.

Dog/Child Interaction: How to Develop a Safe Relationship

Dog-child interaction is the single most important issue to deal with if you have a child and a dog. Children love dogs but dogs don't always love children. When you bring home a new puppy, your child should be trained together with your dog. Dog owners need to remember that it takes two to tango. Children aren't often taught how to treat a new doggy which can make his life a living hell. This is not only torment for your dog but can be dangerous to your child. Never trust your child alone with ANY dog, regardless of how gentle that dog is known to be. A child tends to know just which buttons to press to turn the gentlest animal into a dangerous beast. Most dogs initially feel threatened by a child because they are at eye level, they have high-pitched voices and make vigorous movements. The dog senses that the child is somewhat unpredictable. Dog-child interaction should be monitored in order to make sure that child and your dog are getting along.

What you should teach your child
Do not let your child hug the dog until the dog-child relationship has developed and they've become comfortable with each other. Children are accustomed to showing their affection with a hug, but some dogs will tolerate it while others will not. Never approach a strange dog without asking the owner if it is o.k. to do so. Allow the dog to sniff you before you try to pat him. Stay away from stray dogs. A stray dog may carry disease or try to attack. Never scream or run away from a dog. This will only start a chase. Never run towards a dog or around a dog. Never approach a dog face to face. This is threatening to them. Always approach a dog from the side. This will allow the dog-child relationship to develop. Never look a dog square in the eyes. Never tease or hit a dog whether he's loose, tied up, behind a fence or in a crate. Never play rough games with a dog, such as tug-of-war. This will encourage a dog to become aggressive. Never pat a dog on the head. Always approach him under the chin or on his back. Never bother a sleeping dog. Never bother the dog while he's eating or chewing his favorite bone. A dog is not a toy. Never yank on his ears or pull his tail. If a dog poses a threat, teach your child to stay perfectly still with arms at the side, avoid eye contact, don't scream. If there is no one around who can pull the dog away, have your child use a jacket, schoolbag, garbage can cover, or anything he can find as a shield while backing away from the dog slowly. If a dog has knocked your child to the ground, he should curl up into a ball with his hands behind his head to protect his face. Never give the dog table food. Always play with your dog under adult supervision. Always be kind to your dog. This will help develop a dog-child friendship. Always protect your dog from harm.
What you should know as a dog owner
Begin obedience training your dog as soon as possible. Don't wait til he gets older, it'll only get harder. Never leave your child alone with the dog. Never let your child walk the dog alone. Never tie up your dog. Provide your dog with a fenced-in space instead. Socialize your dog. Get him acquainted with other dogs as early as possible. You should also get him familiar with everything in his environment, both indoors and outdoors. This is key in attempting to establish a great dog-child relationship. Reward your dog for good behavior with praise and a treat. If you leave your dog in the yard, make sure your fence does not have spaces large enough for a child to stick their hands through. Never allow your child to abuse the dog in any way. This will never enable a dog-child relationship to flourish. Give your dog a space to call his own to which he can retreat to if he is feeling bothered (such as a crate). Do not allow your child to invade your dog's space especially while your dog is eating. Get your dog used to being touched on all body parts. This will make him more comfortable around children. Teach your dog to maintain a good temperment in the case of having his food bowl taken away while he's eating or removing a chew toy from his mouth. This will allow your dog to be more comfortable having a child around when he's eating or chewing on his favorite toy. Teach your child how to properly handle the dog/puppy. Walk your dog on a leash. Do not allow him to roam free. Keep in mind that just because your dog is wonderful around your own children doesn't mean he will tolerate other children the same way. Spay/neuter your dog.
If you have a dog and are expecting a baby

First off, if you haven't read the information above this subhead, go up and do so now. The above information will provide you with all the do's and dont's in preparing your dog for an addition to the family. If your dog has never been around a child for a long period of time, you will have the next nine months to get him used to it. Dog-child interaction is crucial at this stage.

Invite a niece, nephew, cousin, neighbor, etc. over for a few hours a week (Preferably a child who still wears a diaper. This will get the dog used to baby smell as well).

This idea satisfies two objectives: it will get your dog used to having a child around; and will develop your dog's behavior in such a way which allows him to have a dog-child relationship with almost any child. Teach your dog how to behave around a child using much of the information discussed above.

Do not wait until the baby is born in order to make adjustments. Try to make as many adjustments as you can before the baby arrives, this way he won't be hit with all these changes at once. For instance, if you will have to move furniture around to accommodate a high chair or a playpen, this may affect the placement of your dog's bed and bowl. If so, make this move before the baby arrives. This will lessen the impact it will have on your dog and is less likely to affect the dog-child relationship.

Once you have the nursery set up for the baby, teach your dog that he will not be allowed in the room, at all. If he learns this before the baby comes, it will lessen the dog's resentment towards the baby.

Get your dog used to the sounds a baby makes by playing a recording of a baby cooing and crying. Play this recording in the nursery in order to indicate to your dog where exactly he can expect these sounds to be coming from.

Make accommodations for your dog for the day you go into labor. He may have to spend hours alone before daddy's comes home from the hospital.

When it's time to bring the baby home, have someone go into another room with the dog while you put the baby down and get settled. Then bring the baby out and introduce the dog to the baby. The dog will probably give the baby a sniff or two and seek your attention. After all, he hasn't seen you in days. At this point, it would be a good idea to put the baby down and spend some time playing with the dog. Show him he's still loved. This will aid in the development of the dog-child relationship.

Your dog may require some extra attention in the first days of welcoming the baby. This will keep him from resenting the baby for stealing all the attention. Give him your undivided attention.

Allow your dog to be present when changing or feeding the baby.

Never yell at your dog for getting too close to the baby. Allow him to sniff the baby in order to get used to his scent. Make sure this is done under strict supervision. This will help nourish the dog-child relationship.

As the baby gets older, you will teach him to respect the dog and be gentle towards him.

Get your child to help you with dog chores, such as feeding and walking the dog.

Before your know it, a natural dog-child bond will form which will give them a long-lasting friendship for years to come.

Help your child and your dog live in perfect harmony by adhering to these simple rules. Once a good dog-child relationship has been established, this bond will last a lifetime.

If you have trouble controlling your dog, you should bring your dog (and your child) to an obedience class to help you get started.
